Ten Top Tips When Booking A Wedding Band

We've been lucky enough to play for 1000's of weddings, in many bands, encountering countless brides and grooms along the way.  These tips are culled from our experiences, and those of our musician friends...

1 – Plan ahead and book early:  Most popular bands are booked up 12-18 months ahead, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead as far as you can.  When you find the right band, book them!  Don’t leave it too late and miss out, having to settle for your second-best choice…

2 – Ask your guests for feedback:  Talk to your friends and family about the bands you are considering.  The last thing you want is an empty dance floor because while the band is perfect for you and your partner, they don’t appeal to your guests’ tastes.

3 – Talk with your venue about your plans:  Ask if they have bands regularly, and see what advice or possible restrictions they might have.  Some hotels might ask for an early finish to the noise in consideration for their other guests, for example.  Check if they have a noise limiter fitted, as the band will need to know about this.  Is there enough stage room for your choice of band? There’s no point booking a 9-piece soul band if there’s only room for a DJ  :)

4 – Check out your choice of wedding band:  Go see them play live, and if possible get to meet them.   For popular and busy bands this might be difficult, as they’ll mostly be playing private events, but most will still do some low-key public gigs so prospective clients can come and see them.   Also find out what other people say – social media is great for this.

5 – Use a booking contract:  For most wedding bands, any booking is only 100% definite once a contract is signed, and a booking deposit paid.  If the band you’re considering aren’t too sure about this, choose a professional band instead!
