Ten Top Tips When Booking A Wedding Band

Part 2...

6 – Keep the band and venue in the loop:  Keep them both informed about your plans, and any changes that might happen – timings for example.  Tell the venue when the band are arriving, what space they’ll need; also make sure the band have a contact name and number for the hotel.  Putting the band and venue in touch with each other can help prevent any last minute headaches.

7 – Check how to pay the band:  This is usually agreed at the time of booking, often many months ahead of the wedding day, so it’s easy to forget.  Double-check nearer the time.  Cash on the night is often fine, but it’s increasingly usual to pay the band by bank transfer a few days early.

8 – Appoint a level-headed person for the night:  This is a key thing, appoint someone who’s going to be sober and level-headed to be a spokesperson for you, should you need them.  You’ll be busy with your guests, so if the band are too loud for example, or there’s a change in the evening’s running order, it’s much better for you to have someone you trust to have a quiet word with the band, while you continue to enjoy your party.  They can also be the one to keep an eye on your guests, there’s few things worse for a band than being bothered by an over-enthusiastic relative, or protecting their equipment from drunken party animals… your spokesperson can be the ideal choice to keep an eye on your guests for you.

9 – Confirm the band’s attire:  Most bands will dress up or down depending on the style that’s most appropriate for your event, don’t forget to let them know if you have a preference.

10 – Trust your band:  After all, you’ve employed professionals.  They’ve probably played for 100’s  or 1000’s of weddings before, and although every wedding is unique, their experience means they will likely know best.  By all means let them know which songs from their song-list you’d like to hear (or NOT hear!), but don’t try to dictate every song they should play all evening.  They’re experienced, they will know what songs to play to get your guests onto the dancefloor.  Also – don’t start too early, even though it’s tempting.  Start at 8.30 or even better 9pm to make sure your guests are still up and dancing late into the evening - you don’t want the party to peak too soon!
